Aboriginal Cook Apprenticeship Project

Project Profile
The objective of this project is to promote and support the hiring of Aboriginal persons into the Apprenticeship Branch program for the trade of Level One Cook. First Nation, Metis, and Inuit individuals will be recruited from the City of Winnipeg to apply in this program.

The individuals participating should have the desire to attain the Red Seal by signing on as an Apprentice. The basis of this pilot project is to promote Aboriginal people in the trade of Cook. The Centre for Education and Work's main involvement with the Apprenticeship Branch is to use their expertise to develop the Apprenticeship Branch's curriculum to adapt a Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) model with a User-friendly Assessment tool.

PLA is a systemic process that looks at what a person knows and what a person can do, which can lead to the recognition of skills and knowledge. This is the premise and direction of the pilot project, i.e., to develop capacity building for Aboriginal people in the trade of Level One Cook.

Partners including the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Partners for Careers, Apprenticeship Branch have collaborated to ensure the success of the Aboriginal candidate entering this program.

This pilot project is the first of its kind using the PLA in the trade of Cook. Several other trades have used the PLA model but never from the development stages of curriculum and assessment. The Aboriginal Cook Apprenticeship Opportunity pilot project opens new doors for Aboriginal people for capacity building.
