Background
In order to consider themselves as appropriate candidates
for prior learning assessment, adult learners need to
self-assess against the outcomes of courses and programs.
At this juncture the curricula used by Adult Learning
Centres is not always clearly laid out nor accessible
for adult learners. Thus, one objectives of the project
was to develop outcomes with Adult Learning Centres
around School Initiated Courses and the Grade 12 Math
and English curricula.
School Initiated
Courses
To compensate for local and specific needs, the Department
of Education has introduced a course option for any
school, including Adult Learning Centres. This option
allows each school to develop specific courses, called
School Initiated Courses (or SIC’s), in order
to meet these specific needs.
Because so much of the schools curricula
is based on the needs of children and adolescents, much
of the current course offerings are either inappropriate
or irrelevant for adult learners. Adult Learning Centres
regularly submit a range of SIC’s in order to
meet the needs of their students. However, this means
that each course is seen as a ‘stand alone.’
Thus, other programs do not necessarily benefit from
the course organization of the original SIC.
